Build a useful first web page with HTML and CSS

Create a small, understandable page before adding frameworks, accounts or payments.

Start with a small result

Create a folder for your project and a file named index.html. Begin with a page that introduces a real service or one of your projects. The goal is to understand the structure of a page, not to reproduce a complicated product in one afternoon.

Use meaningful page elements

HTML gives content structure. Use one main heading for the page, clear section headings, paragraphs, lists and links. Use a button for an action and a link for navigation. Put labels on form fields. These choices make the page easier to use with a keyboard and assistive tools as well as easier to maintain.

Add a stylesheet

Create a styles.css file and link it from your document. Set a readable font, comfortable line height, strong text contrast and a content width that does not create extremely long lines. Start with a single-column layout and add wider-screen layouts only when the content needs them.

Build in small steps

  • Add your page heading and a short introduction.
  • Add two or three useful sections.
  • Add a contact link with a real destination.
  • Add styles for spacing, typography and layout.
  • Resize the browser and check the phone layout.
  • Test every link using the keyboard as well as a pointer.

Understand what a static form cannot do

A form drawn in HTML does not automatically deliver an email or save a message. It needs a correctly configured server endpoint or suitable form service. Do not show a success message unless the submission was actually accepted. Never put mail passwords or private API keys in frontend code.

Keep a record of your work

Save useful versions with clear commit messages in a repository. Write a README explaining the purpose of the page, how to run it and what is unfinished. Ask someone else to use the page and watch where they hesitate.

Next step

Once the page works locally, choose a publishing approach that supports what you built. Our hosting guide explains the difference between a static website, a PHP application and a server-based application.
