Prepare for your first graduate interview

Turn your studies, projects and everyday responsibilities into clear evidence for an employer.

Start with the role, not a memorised speech

Read the job description and make a two-column list: what the employer needs, and a real example showing you can do it. University projects, a student society, volunteering, family responsibilities and a small business can all provide evidence. Say exactly what you did; do not turn a group achievement into an individual claim.

Build a small evidence bank

Prepare five examples covering teamwork, a difficult problem, learning something unfamiliar, meeting a deadline and a mistake you corrected. For each, write the situation, your responsibility, the actions you personally took and the result. A result can be a working prototype or feedback that changed your approach; it does not need to be an impressive invented percentage.

Research the organisation

Understand its customers, the role and one current piece of work. Write down why the opportunity interests you and two questions that cannot be answered by simply reading the homepage. For a technical role, practise explaining a project to someone who did not build it.

Rehearse out loud

Ask a friend to run a short practice interview. Answer in your own words, listen to the complete question and pause before responding. If you do not understand, ask for clarification. If you have not used a tool, explain what you do know and how you would learn it rather than claiming experience you do not have.

Your day-before checklist

  • Confirm the interview time, time zone, location and contact person.
  • Check your travel route or test the video link, audio and internet connection.
  • Prepare a copy of your CV and the job description.
  • Choose three projects or experiences you can discuss honestly.
  • Prepare two questions about the team, expectations or learning opportunities.
  • Arrange a quiet place and a backup way to contact the interviewer.

After the interview

Write down the questions you found difficult while they are fresh. A short professional thank-you is appropriate when you have a suitable contact. Keep applying and improving; no preparation method guarantees an offer.
