Plan your first business website before you code

Define the audience, pages and one useful action before choosing a framework or template.

Decide who the website serves

Write one sentence: “This website helps [audience] do [action].” A tourism operator may want travellers to request a quotation. A graduate may want an employer to review projects. A shop may want customers to browse products and ask about availability. Different goals need different content and systems.

Choose the smallest useful scope

Start with the information needed to support that action: what you offer, who it is for, examples of your work, contact details and a clear next step. A simple business site may need Home, Services, About and Contact. An online shop or booking system requires additional planning for stock, payments, cancellations and support.

Prepare your content

Collect your logo, business description, service details, photographs you are allowed to use and a real contact address. Write short descriptions in the language your customers understand. Do not invent reviews, partner logos, qualifications or client projects.

Sketch before styling

Draw a phone-sized layout on paper. Place the most important information near the top and give each page one obvious next action. Check whether someone unfamiliar with the business can explain what you offer after reading the first screen.

Make a working checklist

  • The page title describes its purpose.
  • Navigation labels make sense without explanation.
  • Contact links point to the correct phone number or inbox.
  • Forms show useful validation and submission results.
  • Images have suitable descriptions and manageable file sizes.
  • Prices, exclusions and terms are clear before a customer commits.

Choose tools after the plan

HTML and CSS may be enough for a small informational website. A content management system can help a non-technical owner update pages. A custom application may be appropriate when a business has a specific workflow. Choose for the job and the person maintaining it, not because a tool is fashionable.

Agree what happens after launch

Record who owns the domain, how hosting renews, who updates content and what support is included. A website is an ongoing business service, not just a folder delivered at the end of a project.
